FAQ Fridays | My Child Won't Sit Still | Louisvilles Child Photographer

Here is a concern I hear a lot with parents of small children....

"My child won’t sit still and I’m concerned with how s/he will do during the session."

Children are so much fun to shoot – (I love the play on words) ha

Smaller children, especially those that have just learned to walk are especially fun during photo sessions… if you think posed or studio sessions will work with these kids, think again! This is ultimately the reason I specialize in children sessions because they have the freedom to run around and play outside, I am catching them in their element not trying to stop them from curiosity and MAKE them smile about it.

A session with me will be like play time and I will probably break a sweat from all the running around and "playing". haha But I feel a child should be able to be a child at all times!

If you think we are going to take them outside where they are expected to stay still for my camera, this is not a reality, BUT, chasing them and playing peek a boo is! Getting real smiles will be so much easier when I let them do what they want!

The most important thing in all sessions no matter what kind of session it is... is FUN!! All clients should have FUN on their shoot and that includes children!

I want it to feel like we are just hanging out at the park with no pressure to "preform" like in a studio. Running and curiosity are the things kids are interested in when they are outside and I like to catch that in the photographs.

Don't worry...  all the photos will not be of running and goofy antics but I have two small children of my own and I know with them I am only going to get great photos if it's what THEY want to do. If I try to force the issue or make them sit, stand, smile etc. they only get aggravated and I get images that are... ehhh so so at BEST!

A Note for Parents:

PLEASE don’t try to get the child to do something they don’t want to do, this only further aggravates them while making my job difficult. It’s best to ask them to do something and see if they agree, if not we will take another approach, maybe a tiny little bribe will work but please don’t hold it over their head the whole time trying to get them to do what you want.

If your not "cool" with bribes such as candy, bring an item(s) from home that you know consoles your child when they are feeling down, shy or upset. Obviously if your child loves this item enough to let it change a mood for them wouldn't you WANT them to have a professional photo taken with it? As a parent, I KNOW I would!

And lastly don't stress over your child's performance in front of the camera, they know when you're stress and it makes them stressed! More than likely I will get the shots you will adore but if for whatever reason your little booger simply refuses to cooperate we can reschedule the shoot, no problem!

the short n sweet answer is... "NO Worries Mom, I got this!" :o)

You could always just bring a costume and a lets get REAL crazy! haha

Taken with a cell phone but for a while this was the only way i could get a picture of my little handsome man... OR he would hold up a toy right in front of his face!

Mercy Academy Senior Model | 2013 | Fight against Domestic Violence

Meet Devan - Class of 2013 Senior at Mercy Academy

Devan and a few of her classmates are doing a senior project that they would like to ask your help with.

Devan Bramer, Jess Cowles, Katie Comstock, Kelsey Henry, and Courtney Anderson ages 17 to 18 years old, are all working together to get a bill passed through the capitol and are trying to lobby against domestic violence.

Domestic Violence is important to these girls because every single one of them has someone in their life who has been affected by domestic violence. A loved one who has been physically or verbally abused but was too scared to seek help.

These awesome girls want to CHANGE that!! They want to be an advocate for people who are currently in such a devastating situation, to show them that there is ALWAYS a way out and that "LOVE SHOULD NOT HURT"!

The Truth on Domestic Violence|

Here are a few statistics you should know:

  • about 44% of rape victims are under age 18.

  • almost 1 in 5 female high school students reports being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner?

  • 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus.

  • 1 in 3 women in the state of Kentucky will be the victim of domestic violence in her lifetime.

ONE in THREE!

Think about that... think of 2 of your closest friends... now think that one of the three of you will experience this horrific situation for yourself and be a victim of domestic violence!

There is something you can do to help! Raise Awareness...

These girls are volunteering at the Center for Women and Families to raise money! These funds will go toward renovating a room at the facility so they can make it a better place for abused families who have to stay there.

You can help by liking the Fight Against Domestic Violence Facebook Page join and help spread awareness about domestic violence!

Through this page you will be informed on how the project is developing, the different fundraisers you can take part in and other ways you can get involved.

North Bullitt High School | Senior Model | 2013

more on facebook

 ***********************************************
this photo has been submitted for Chic Critique form's Photography Idol

I was to choose a photo that rep's my style as a photographer and while i find several different styles intriguing and try to achieve different looks with different shoots, based on desires and personality, i think the above photo reps my style best. I like vintage, light and airy images as well,

but...

I like the clean look to this, the tone, lighting, contrast, sharpness and natural look of this photo are all things i look for in a "favorite" image. I also find that the simplest compositions are also my fav!

post processing was very minimal with this image and that's what i think i really enjoyed about it.

Glimpses week 32 | Project 52 | a new beginning

Here it is... week 32 of the Glimpses weekly project and I have been so busy I haven't been able to keep up with my personal project! I mean I have been taking photos of my family, with the intention to post in Glimpses but yeah as you can see my intentions don't go very far!

HOWEVER, it's an important week in the Arms household as my little baby boy begins to spread his independent little wings and after spending about $200 on supplies, uniforms, shoes etc. he is rightfully labeled a

:::wait for it:::

SCHOOL KID

aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

OK I'm back... haha

Ok ok enough shenanigans...

The first day of school was Wednesday and Mark and I walked him to school, more like we walked and he RAN. We got there and he found his classroom and his seat all by himself. He was given a worksheet to work on and had it half completed before Mark and I decided it was time for us to go. As we were walking out Mark had to take one last little peek in the classroom before we ventured home, talking about what a little man he has become. "Holy CRAP, we have a kid in school!" my husband exclaimed... haha I said "YEAH hun... i know!" deep sighhh

It's such a weird feeling that I have - I am not a "helicopter" parent because I let my child do things in his own age appropriate independence, i try to let him mess up and make mistakes and I want him to be his own little self but my main thought about him being in school is... CHOICES!

yep you read that right... my child has more freedom to make his own choices and while that should be like DUH to some, for me it's angst because he is still only 5 years old, obviously he is still my baby and i just want him to make good choices and with the influence of others to sway his decisions, that is what makes me nervous because he doesn't know you can't trust everyone, he has a big heart and thinks everyone else does to. I don't want to take that thought way from him because that's the end of innocents, but how do you go about doing it with out terrifying  him about certain things.

Take yesterday for example, he watched a video in health class on germ and literally started crying because his throat hurt, grant it, we all are having some allergy issues right now so it quite possibly could have hurt but then when he came home he was 10 shades of paranoid about the computer keyboard and was talking about it like it was a monster!

In his big “DRAMA” voice… "mom I touched the keyboard and then I touched your hair… go wash it!" then before he went to sleep last night he asked… "are you going to wash your hair?" and it's not like he hasn't learned about germs before, i guess he has just never seen a "movie" about it. i don't, maybe I'm crazy...

Am I the only one with reservations like this?

What to wear | August style | Louisville, KY Family Photographer

August, the month of Back to School!

These boards are to School you on up coming fashions and to simply inspire clients attire, because the days of khakis/jeans and white button down shirts/Polo's for the entire family are LONG GONE!
Here are some ideas for fun pops of color in your shoot.

August is here and you know what that means... it's back to school time and the beginnings of FALL - the photographers busy season!

ahhh the comings of fall... families usually take advantage of the slight cool down in temperatures to update those family photos and newly high school seniors are taking their place in the cool crowd getting those personalized senior photo sessions, so excited to show them off to friends!

But first things first...

BACK TO SCHOOL!
Whether you have a fresh faced Kindergartner or an experienced Senior, school will be starting soon!

Don't forget to take a moment in the coming months to update the family photos as well as commemorate the upcoming school year for your little ones...

Especially if you are anything like me where most to ALL of your "family photos" are without you in them because your 99.9% of the time, behind the camera!

It is super important to make sure you have photos with you and your kids at the very least... but wouldn't it be nice to take some as an entire family, with not one single person left out, even YOU?

Trust me the whole timer function is a great feature on most point & shoots but super difficult to actually get that great shot (with little ones anyway), so make sure you budget to get those updated photos.

oh and don't forget about the suggestion tip that i posted to facebook a while back...

Get together with another family and split your session costs!
if this is something your interested in, email me today!

Check out our updated family photos at the bottom!

New Fashions Available August 12th

As always....

These fashion boards for what to wear for your session guides are merely to give you an idea of would work well in your photography shoot or what I would love to see a client wear.
These fun little boards are NOT to make you go purchase these exact selections on the day they come out at the store nor are they designed to diminish your own sense of style.
By all means I want you to come to your session fully dressed in the attire that screams "ME" because those will be the photos that best represent YOU at this moment in time.

Rummage your closet and pull something together to emulate these fashions.
For family sessions start with the family member that has the least amount of items to work with, then select a color that is common to the whole family's wardrobe or that can be coordinated with another common color of the family's attire.
Then go to the next family members closet and choose something that coordinates with what you have just chosen. This does NOT mean choosing the SAME exact color but a choice with the same color family or style.
Continue this until everyone has an outfit, then lay them out next to each other to make sure they actually do look well side by side, layered, etc.

A new fashion board will be posted at the beginning of each month, but if you need MORE fashion boards, RIGHT NOW...

Please visit my Pinterest board of "Inspire my clients style"
Check out the Senior Pose n Clothes board as well.
